Paper Airplanes & Golden Hour: A Cinematic Northern Michigan Engagement Session

It felt like a real date night — intentional, romantic, a little playful — with golden skies overhead and paper airplanes drifting into the sunset.
Shot right here in Gaylord, Michigan, this session blended documentary-style storytelling with a creative twist that made it completely unique.
Turning Love Notes Into Something Tangible
Instead of simply tossing paper airplanes for the sake of a cute photo, Emerson & Braylon started by writing love notes to each other.
Real words. Real thoughts. Real emotion.
They folded those notes into paper airplanes and sent them into the sky, watching their words float above them as the sun dropped lower behind the trees.
It was playful. It was meaningful. And it felt like something they’ll remember long after the photos are printed.
That’s what makes a date night session different.
Cinematic, But Still Real
Golden hour in Northern Michigan always delivers beautiful light, but what made this session feel cinematic wasn’t just the sunset.
It was the movement. The laughter. The quiet in-between moments.
The way they read each other’s notes. The way they smiled before looking up.The way the paper caught the light midair.
Instead of stiff poses, this session unfolded naturally. Like a scene from a film, but rooted in real connection.

Why I Love Date Night Sessions
Date night sessions remove pressure.
There’s no expectation to “perform.” Instead, couples get to interact, move, and simply be together. Whether it’s grabbing coffee, walking through town, writing love notes in a field at sunset, or something more unique, the experience feels more like a memory than a photoshoot.
That’s the goal.
As a Gaylord engagement photographer, I’m always looking for ways to make sessions feel intentional and personal, not just beautiful.
This one was both.
